Linetec Customer and Supplier Appreciation Golf Outing

Thank you to everyone that joined us for our 32nd Annual Open House and Golf Event. Despite the dreary weather in the morning, we had a wonderful day. Each year, our suppliers are so thoughtful and generous in their donations!

Regardless of the rain that fell the previous evening and that morning, the course was in fine shape. Thank you Pine Valley Golf Course!

Each year brings new firsts, this year we had a First Time Golfer! Fabio from PPG (originally from Brazil) had never been on a golf course before. Their team didn’t win, but they assured us they had a great time.

Not only do our guests get to golf at our outing, but they also have the chance to answer trivia questions, find hidden items throughout the course, try for the best poker hand and play crazy games! Two of the games this year were Birdie Bounce…..

Linetec People to Know: Cara Bahlow

CaraB-(2)-webQ:  Tell me about your job

A:  I am the Quality Engineer for the paint facility. This year, I will celebrate my 10-year anniversary with Linetec.  My responsibilities include supervising the Quality Assurance department, reviewing customer specifications and working with customers to understand their quality expectations, managing customer concerns and returns, corrective actions, maintaining certifications, and providing requests for documentation such as test reports and certificates of analysis.  I relay customers’ needs internally to ensure that we are providing the quality finish that our customers are expecting.

Q: What did you do prior to Linetec?

A: Prior to Linetec I worked in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, for a global adhesive corporation specializing in the distribution of specialty chemicals and equipment. I spent eight years as the Quality Manager for two divisions that offered custom packaging for a variety of materials and developed custom-formulated products.  I enjoyed my job thoroughly, but was excited for the opportunity to return to Wausau with my young family so we could spend a lot of time with our extended family. Linetec was the perfect fit!  Often people tease me that I went from watching glue dry to watching paint dry!

Q: What is your favorite part of your job?

A:  My favorite part of my job, as well as the biggest challenge of my job, is the fast paced nature of the production environment.  In quality you can never have a plan for the day because you do not know what challenges the day will bring.  I really like visiting customers and working through customer audits to understand how they use our services and what end application their product has.  I also like helping and watching employees grow into experienced, confident employees who are proud of their work and what Linetec has to offer.

Q: What is the biggest change you’ve seen over the years of doing your job?

A:  The biggest change I’ve seen in my job is the evolvement of Linetec’s quality program and that of our customers.  Many of our customers use instrumentation in their receiving and quality inspection.  Our employees, the data we maintain, and the testing and procedures that we have in place have advanced significantly over the years.  Customer requests that once seemed an impossibility have now become standard procedure.  I am proud of what we’ve accomplished; the Linetec team has never been stronger!

Q:  What is something you are looking forward to?

A:  At Linetec I look forward to the growth our new product offerings.  There are some very exciting finishes I can’t wait to see more of on our paint line!  Personally, I look forward to family vacations and every moment spent together making memories as a family.

CaraB-(3)-webQ:  What do you enjoy doing outside of work?

A:  Outside of work, my husband and I enjoy cheering our 14-year-old son and 11-year-old daughter on in their activities – whether it is on a football field, dance studio or one of their many Scouting adventures.  I’ve been a Girl Scout leader and a Sunday School teacher for many years. I love seeing that look on a child’s face when they’ve learned something new or mastered a new skill.  I hope I’ve influenced them positively and someday they’ll remember these moments with a smile.  I love singing for our church and participating in the church choir.  I enjoy swimming, figure skating and playing tennis.  My favorite place to be is our family cabin in Tomahawk, Wisconsin – boating, fishing, swimming, campfires and ice cream.  It has been a very special part of my life since I was a young child.  There is no place that I would rather be!

Gov. Walker visits Linetec and praises its successful growth

Gov-shaking hands-250pxWisconsin Governor Scott Walker visited Linetec on April 18 to meet with the company’s leadership and to see its expanded facility in Wausau, Wisconsin. As one of the largest architectural finishing companies in the U.S., Linetec added a third anodize line and associated improvements in Dec. 2015. Linetec’s facility expansion increased its existing capacity and capabilities by more than 50 percent.

“Linetec is an example of a company growing and expanding in our state with the help of a partnership between the state of Wisconsin and the city of Wausau,” said Walker.

GovWalker-RickMarshall-smallLinetec’s president Rick Marshall hosted Walker on a tour of the company’s campus, which now spans more than 750,000 square feet and provides room to further enhance production flow throughout the facilities. Joining Walker and Marshall on the tour were Wausau Mayor Jim Tipple, Wausau mayor-elect Robert Mielke, plus representatives from the Wausau City Council, Wisconsin Manufacturers & Commerce and the Wisconsin Economic Development Corporation (WEDC), and Linetec’s associates.

Gov-employee-smallLinetec’s growth also brings employment opportunities to the city of Wausau. “We have added nearly 200 jobs in the last five years. Almost half of those additions have been in the last 12 months and related to this expansion. We make good hires and keep them,” stated Marshall. “The jobs created have been good paying jobs. Our starting rates are $15 per hour plus premiums and bonuses. While the labor market is tight, Linetec has success in finding qualified employees in the area. We are seeking to fill 40 recently added positions and more will be added through the year.”

Marshall continued, “Our most recent 180,000-square-foot expansion represents an estimated $15 million investment. The tax credits available through the WEDC and the Tax Incremental Financing grants available in Wisconsin contributed to our decision and ability to grow here in Wausau.”

“In total, over the past five years, we have put $4.7 billion worth of tax relief into the hands of the hard-working people and employers of this state,” said Walker.

Gov and Andy-smallMarshall also expressed his appreciation for all involved in the expansion. “We are thankful for our hard-working and talented employees; for financial stability and strength of our parent company, Apogee Enterprises; for the support of our community and suppliers; and for our strong, long-lasting customer relationships that are at the core of Linetec’s success.”

This addition supports Linetec’s anodize customers across North America with short and reliable lead times, according to Marshall. “Our finishing capabilities have helped attract other new companies to the area, both suppliers and customers, such as Polywood Fabrication and Southern Stretch Forming,” he added.

“Linetec has twice the anodizing capacity as any other anodizer in the U.S. under one roof. There’s no other place in the country that has three anodizing lines of this size and capability. Our anodize consistency is truly the best in the world,” praised Marshall. New finishing capabilities are another associated benefit. A new, proprietary anodize color and a new powder coat option are expected to be introduced in the next month.

Logan airport garage’s dynamic façade features 48,000 metal panels finished by Linetec

Flapper2-webBoston Logan International Airport’s new, 10-story West Garage Extension features an attractive, kinetic exterior to distinctively screen the facility. Designed by Arrowstreet Inc. and manufactured by EXTECH, the dynamic façade system consists of more than 48,000 aluminum flapper panels that move in response to wind currents. Each flapper panel was finished by Linetec in Class I clear anodize.

The 6-inch square curved flapper panels are set within 353 extruded aluminum framing support assemblies that span eight stories high by 290 feet wide. Subjected to 130 mile per hour winds to test system resiliency, the system’s anodize finish also contributes to its durability. Class I coating is a high-performance anodic finish used primarily for exterior building products and other products that must withstand continuous outdoor exposure.

Logan3-webAnodizing successfully combines science with nature to create one of the world’s best metal finishes. Because it is an integral part of the substrate, the anodic coating provides excellent wear and abrasion resistance with minimal maintenance.

Choosing clear anodize to create the unique façade for Logan Airport’s West Garage Extension not only contributes to its lasting performance, but also accentuates the intended sense of movement as the light reflects off the aluminum flapper panels that seem to dance in the wind.

“Various shapes, material thickness and finishes were tested, resulting in the curved anodized aluminum pieces that reflect light and ripple with the breeze,” noted David Bois, principal at Arrowstreet. “Our partnership with EXTECH allowed us to develop and fabricate a system for the facade that would have been difficult – if not impossible – without their collaboration.”

Logan2-web3Before finalizing the facade design, EXTECH provided Arrowstreet with several mock-ups for the Massachusetts Port Authority’s (Massport’s) review and approval. The self-supporting Massport owns and operates Boston Logan International Airport, and receives no state tax money to support its operations or facilities. In the last decade, Massport and its airline partners have invested more than $4.4 billion to build a new runway, roadways, terminals, taxiways and garages.

Massport relied on Arrowstreet to lead a multidisciplinary team that evaluated and integrated the new garage within the existing Central Parking, walkways and adjacent terminals. Situated over the existing Hilton Hotel parking lot, it is the airport’s tallest parking structure and offers 1,700 more parking spaces. The resulting garage optimizes the experience for passengers and its dynamic facade enhances the view for the travelling public and visitors of the nearby 9/11 Memorial and Hilton Hotel.

Turner Construction Company served as the general contractor. Construction on the 68,880-square-foot building started in June 2015. Massachusetts-based glazing contractor, Ipswich Bay Glass Company, began installing the dynamic façade in November, and worked through the winter to complete the exterior in Jan. 2016.

flapper-web“The local glazing contractor installed the custom, prefabricated kinetic panels in record time. We believe this is a working relationship between architect and fabricator provides opportunities for innovation within our client’s budgetary and schedule constraints,” added Bois.

He concluded, “The move from the mass-produced to a more custom approach in design and construction provides for new possibilities which parallel clients’ rising expectations. Without the collaborative process, this unique installation could not have occurred within the budget or the project schedule. Simple, common components come together to form an uncommon result.”
