THE DR. MIRIAM and SHELDON G. ADELSON EDUCATIONAL CAMPUS Nevada’s only Jewish educational center, The Adelson was designed by DLR Group to serve students from pre-kindergarten through 12th grades. Students, teacher and visitors enter the campus through a 32-foot-tall grand entrance crowned with a glass dome manufactured and installed by Super Sky Products. Helping protect the dome from Nevada’s harsh climate, Linetec finished the aluminum framing in a Bone White color using Kynar® 70% PVDF resin-based coating.

Remodeled Royal Hawaiian Center features new Super Sky skylights with finishing by Linetec to withstand extreme climate

Royal-Hawaiin-Center--Building-C--2011webConcluding its multi-year, multi-building renovation, The Royal Hawaiian Center in Waikiki revitalizes and reestablishes itself as a premier shopping and entertainment destination. With more than 110 shops and restaurants in three four-story buildings, the 310,000-square-foot Center is one of Hawaii’s largest shopping malls. The six-acre retail campus connects to the Sheraton Waikiki and Royal Hawaiian Hotel, just minutes from Waikiki Beach. 

The Center’s refreshed exterior seamlessly blends with its lush surroundings, including an added green gathering space for entertainment and cultural programming. On Buildings A and C, designed by Architects Hawaii Ltd. (AHL), skylight systems by Super Sky Products Enterprises, LLC showcase natural light and views. Linetec painted the skylight’s aluminum framing members in a durable, 70 percent PVDF resin-based coating to protecting against the intense sunlight, heavy rains, high humidity and salt spray.

Owned by RHC Property Holdings LLC, The Royal Hawaiian Center opened in 1979. Designed in the Brutalist Modern style of the time, heavy concrete exterior walls defined the structure with little embellishment or connection to the environment or the community. The Center stands upon a parcel of land known as Helumoa, once home to Hawaiian royalty.

After years of increasing vacancy and declining visitors, the first phase of the $115 million renovation and expansion began in 2005. Callison Companies (now, CallisonRTKL, a design consultancy of Arcadis) is credited for this initial step in transforming what was once a dark, outdated shopping center into a vibrant, lifestyle-oriented retail and entertainment community. The heavy walls were replaced by open, modern façades and native landscaping.

AHL also contributed its expertise in Hawaiian cultural sensitivity in the architecture, permit processing and expediting services, and construction administration of the Center’s renovation. According to AHL, “This new design conveys a Hawaiian sense of place that is consistent with the City and County of Honolulu’s Waikiki Special Design District guidelines. It incorporates historical, cultural, and educational features consistent with the goal of Kamehameha Schools to perpetuate all things Hawaiian. In addition, visual and pedestrian linkages with the adjoining Sheraton Waikiki and Royal Hawaiian hotels are improved to create an integrated resort destination.”

Protective finishes make a lasting impression

Beyond matching the Center’s updated aesthetics, Linetec supports the architectural performance specifications with 70-percent PVDF resin-based coatings applied to the skylight’s aluminum framing. “Coastal environments are one of the most aggressive outdoor environments for aluminum,” says Linetec’s senior marketing specialist, Tammy Schroeder, LEED® Green Associate. “Without proper precautions and finishes, corrosion to these aluminum components can damage the building envelope’s structural integrity, leading to systemic failure.”  read more

In the News: Keyes dealership

Keyes-4527-webCommercial Architecture magazine’s June Portfolio section spotlights California’s Keyes Automotive’s European Mercedes-Benz Dealership featuring a 41-foot-diameter, custom, multi-slope dome skylight from Super Sky Products The skylight’s durable finishes were applied by Linetec to the aluminum framing members. The finish’s resilient attributes combine with daylight, views and high thermal performance glass to support the dealership’s LEED® Silver certification.

Designed by Dennis J. Flynn Architects, the skylight’s fluid, circular design respects the European Bauhaus style of design highlighted within the dealership’s 235,000-square-foot facility. “As a highly visible property on a major auto row that is back-dropped with residences, the owners’ sensitivity to the community and commitment to state-of-the-art design solution is displayed in this space,” described Flynn. “Crisp finishes complement a work environment that’s equal parts private office and open plan, reflecting the Mercedes-Benz brand in all aspects.”

Contributing to the project’s sustainable, high-end design, Linetec applied a 70 percent PVDF resin-based, two-coat, liquid, mica coating to the skylight’s aluminum framing members. The resulting appearance emphasizes a metallic aesthetic befitting the luxury vehicles sold and serviced at Keyes European.

Keyes-018webThese painted coatings applied by Linetec meet the American Architectural Manufacturers Association’s (AAMA) 2605 industry standards, as well as minimize buildings’ maintenance costs and maximize long lifecycles. These high-performance architectural coatings exhibit outstanding resistance to humidity, color change, chalk, gloss loss and chemicals. They will ensure a long-lasting, durable finish. No other coating system can withstand the rigors of nature and time like these.”

As a recognized, innovative and environmentally responsible finisher, Linetec captures the liquid paints’ volatile organic compounds (VOCs) content using a 100 percent air capture system and safely destroys the VOCs with a regenerative thermal oxidizer.

Enhancing thermal performance for Keyes European, the skylight’s 1,650 square feet glass area is composed of insulated glass units with Solarban® 80 low-e coating. The low-e coating mitigates unwanted solar heat gain that could make potential car buyers uncomfortably warm and minimizes fading caused by damaging ultraviolet radiation.

The Waterfall event center features endless skylight provided by Super Sky, finished by Linetec

Waterfall-Banquet--2014--2webLocated minutes from the heart of Philadelphia, The Waterfall is one of Delaware’s most elegant catering facilities. Renovated in 2014 and reopened in Jan. 2015, it accommodates parties up to 500 people in more than 18,000 square feet. As guests pass through the rotunda of The Waterfall event center, they enter the cocktail room with 18-foot-tall ceilings that feature an “endless” skylight. This 59-foot-long, custom vault skylight with gabled ends was manufactured and installed by Super Sky Products Enterprises, LLC.

Linetec finished the 1,307-square-foot skylight’s aluminum framing in a Bone White two-coat 70 percent polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) resin-based coating. “These architectural coatings meet the industry’s stringent requirements set by the American Architectural Manufacturers Association – AAMA 2605 – and exhibit outstanding resistance to humidity, color change, chalk, gloss loss and chemicals,” said Linetec’s senior marketing specialist, Tammy Schroeder, LEED® Green Associate. “These coatings deliver long-lasting performance that requires minimal maintenance throughout the buildings’ lifespan.”

The primary environmental concern with liquid paints is the solvents, which may have VOC content and must be destroyed safely. Linetec uses a 100 percent air capture system and destroys the VOCs with a regenerative thermal oxidizer, so there is no adverse environmental impact. Linetec then re-uses its heat energy byproduct to improve process energy efficiency. This process of re-use is completed before the material exits the paint line.

Further supporting The Waterfall’s environmental benefits, the skylight systems offer natural light and views through Viracon’s V34-SM(2) bronze, low-e, heat-strengthened, insulated glass. “The combination of high-performance glass and high-performance coatings on Super Sky’s skylight helps keep The Waterfall’s guests comfortable and carefree, and helps keep the facility looking picture-perfect,” added  Schroeder.

Washington University’s Olin Business School’s new buildings feature Super Sky skylights finished by Linetec

WA-Univ-Olin-Bus-03Washington University in St. Louis celebrated the 97th anniversary of Olin Business School with the dedication of two new buildings: Knight Hall and Bauer Hall. Creating a welcoming atmosphere and a lasting impression, a five-story glass atrium crowns the two buildings. Linetec finished Super Sky Products Enterprises, LLC’s skylight systems’ aluminum framing using a 70 percent polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) resin-based coating. The resulting combination achieves the project’s goals for transparency, durability and sustainability, including LEED® Gold certification.

Olin Business School’s new buildings were designed by California-based Moore Ruble Yudell Architects & Planners as the architect-of-record and Mackey Mitchell Architects of St. Louis serving as the associate architect. General contractor, Tarlton Corporation, oversaw construction of the 177,000-square-foot, $90 million project.

WA-Univ-Olin-Bus-01It is the largest single project completed on the Washington University Danforth campus in the shortest span of time, nearly doubling Olin Business School’s footprint on the campus. The aggressive construction schedule began in May 2012 and concluded in March 2014. The buildings’ dedication ceremony took place in May 2014. The inviting space unites the ensemble of buildings housing 11 classrooms, study rooms, a 300-seat auditorium, 75 faculty offices, lounges and other spaces to foster interaction.

“Olin’s student body has more than doubled since we built our first building in 1986, and we have twice as many faculty and degree programs,” said Olin Business School’s dean Mahendra Gupta. “We wanted these buildings to make a statement, to inspire everyone who is going to walk through these corridors, not just today, but for years to come. The world-class facilities give everybody a confidence that the university is committed to create a world-class program.”

WA-Univ-Olin-Bus-07Central to this inspirational facility is the Frick Forum, as described by James Kolker, assistant vice chancellor of campus planning and director of capital projects: “The atrium has become a vertical town square, while the open, flexible spaces that surround it invite connection and collaboration.”

Ryan Navis, Super Sky’s project manager, agreed and elaborated, “Tarlton and Washington University are fantastic customers, some of the best we’ve worked with. That’s vital on a challenging project like this where quality and productive collaboration is the key to working out all of the difficult intricacies.”

Super Sky met the project’s challenging goals, and its aesthetic and performance requirements by manufacturing and installing the skylight systems in three sections. The largest section is an 88-by-91-foot custom vault skylight. A single slope skylight caps another section measuring 5 feet by 46 feet 5 inches. The final skylight is a 29-by-20-foot, custom curved, single slope system.

Navis continued, “Super Sky is only a piece of the puzzle though, and it’s a sum of the parts that brings a project like this to fruition. One of those key parts is our finisher, Linetec. As a national and international company, Super Sky is accustomed to seeking out the best from around the country. Luckily, we have the best right in our backyard. Linetec makes the finishing process an automatic.”

WA-Univ-Olin-Bus-15Sent in 11 separate shipments over several months, Linetec finished Super Sky’s aluminum-framed, custom vault and curved skylights in Ivory, and the narrow, single slope in Bistro Bronze. These systems were painted using PPG’s Duranar®, a two-coat 70 percent polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) resin-based coating. These high-performance architectural coatings meet the industry’s stringent requirements set by the American Architectural Manufacturers Association, AAMA 2605. This standard ensures the coatings exhibit outstanding resistance to humidity, color change, chalk, gloss loss and chemicals for long-lasting performance that requires minimal maintenance throughout the buildings’ lifespan.

While the durable, painted aluminum skylight systems offer natural light and views with a connection to the natural world, the low-e insulated, laminated, silkscreened Viracon VUE1-50 glass keeps the occupants comfortable. In total, the skylights’ total glass area is 11,150 square feet, with each of the hundreds of glass lites averaging five feet in length. “This is a building that is all about natural light – we wanted light to penetrate all five floors,” added Kolker.

Viracon’s high-performance glass also assists in lowering energy use by managing the unwanted solar heat gain and glare. Combined with daylight, views and durable finishes, these attributes can contribute to the project’s LEED for New Construction (LEED-NC) Gold certification through the U.S. Green Building Council.

In addition, Tarlton Corporation’s work on the project earned the Associated General Contractors of America’s 2015 Alliant Build America Award.

Hank Webber, Washington University executive vice chancellor for administration, concluded, “Anytime you work on an iconic university, you face the challenge of how do you meet 21st-century needs in a campus whose physical form was established in the beginning of the 20th century. There is a practical set of needs for classrooms and offices in a modern business school. There is also a fundamental need to create great spaces that build a sense of community.”

Washington University School of Law’s Anheuser-Busch Hall features Super Sky skylight, finished by Linetec

When Washington University in St. Louis renovated the School of Law’s Anheuser-Busch Hall and enlarged the student commons, it took a bold direction to cover Crowder Courtyard in a canopy of glass and metal. Playing a significant role, Super Sky Products manufactured and installed a custom dome skylight spanning 80 by 85 feet over what previously served as outdoor space.

“The skylight geometry and difficult to access location at the top of the courtyard presented some tough challenges to overcome. The top-of-the-line team assembled for this project is really what allows a demanding project such as this to become reality,” explains Super Sky’s project manager, Ryan Navis.

Shielding against weathering, aging and pollution Linetec finished the skylight’s aluminum framing in a Revere Gray color using a high-performance 70% polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) coating. “These are some of the most durable coatings available,” says Linetec’s senior marketing specialist, Tammy Schroeder, LEED® Green Associate. “Their long lifecycle reduces the need for maintenance and replacement and minimizes the associated time, cost and materials.”

The two-story School of Law building is constructed of Missouri Red Granite in the campus’ traditional Gothic style. Designed by Hartman-Cox Architects of Washington, D.C., the $31.2 million, 175,000-square-foot School of Law’s Anheuser-Busch Hall opened in 1997. It earned several accolades including the 2000 Design Award from the American Institute of Architects (AIA) Washington Metropolitan Chapter.

After a decade of use, the student body, faculty and staff had increased by approximately 50 percent. During Anheuser-Busch Hall’s 2008 renovation, Washington University’s internal team served as the general contractor with support from Tarlton Corporation.

While Super Sky’s custom dome skylight is considered the most prominent, new architectural feature, the skylight is just one part of a larger renovation. Other notable aspects of the expansion include: additional group study rooms and faculty offices, a new main entrance on the first floor, and enhanced spaces for clinical education, student services, career services, and computing, audio/visual and web services.
