Slate, Portland’s new, LEED Gold, mixed-use, transit-oriented development features Linetec’s paint, anodize and thermal improvement services

Formerly a vacant lot called Block 75, the new building features window, entrance, unitized curtainwall and panel systems finished by Linetec. Contributing to the building’s high energy-efficiency and sustainability goals, Linetec also provided the thermal improvement services for the glazing systems’ aluminum framing.

Linetec’s expansions continue: adding 70 more employees

Linetec continues to expand capacity and add new jobs to support the market’s increased demand for high-quality finishes and high-performance architectural metal products.

“In the last 24 months, we expanded capacity in both our paint and anodize lines, and added more than 200 new jobs. This year, we already have an immediate need to fill 70 positions, particularly in the paint and thermal services departments. We’re looking for more to join our team of good, hard-working people across all production areas,” says Jane Kessel, Linetec’s vice president of human resources.

Part of the latest job growth is a $3 million investment to double the capacity of the thermal services department. “Continually increasing energy codes are driving our customer base to develop more products that incorporate these thermal services,” explains Andy Joswiak, Linetec’s vice president of operations. “The other driver of the latest job growth is painting volume.”

Linetec painters ensure specified coverage on all aluminum parts

In late 2016, Linetec expanded its painting capacity by going from a five-day operation to a seven-day operation, using new shift structures and adding 40 new positions. Now, with even higher growth rates so far this year, Linetec has initiated further significant hiring in 2017 for more painting capacity.

Examples of Linetec’s immediate job opportunities include positions in production scheduling, packaging, racking, truck drivers, cleaning and maintenance. Starting rates range from $15 to $16 per hour plus premiums and bonuses. Benefits include health and dental, bonus pay, 401k, paid vacation, and tuition reimbursement.

Linetec offers thermally improved, curved extrusions, finished and fully warrantied

Linetec now provide thermal improvement services for curved and radius, finished aluminum extrusions backed with an industry-leading warranty. Linetec’s new processes offer a full pour-and-debridge of radius material, both structural and non-structural, and a fully crimped thermal strut system. There are no restrictions to the degree of curvature, and finishes may be specified in liquid paint, powder coat or anodize.

Durable finishes, thermal comfort and energy performance can be combined with recycled aluminum content, daylight, views and other environmental benefits for recognition by such green building and design guidelines as the U.S. Green Building System’s LEED® certification.

Contributing to commercial and residential properties’ energy efficiency goals, high thermal performance has become an expectation when selecting window, skylight, curtainwall, storefront and entrance systems. A thermal barrier system improves performance by separating the aluminum profile into two parts, while maintaining the structural and long-term durability of the unit. The two methods for doing this are pour-and-debridge or thermal strut systems. Choosing the thermal strut system provides the additional design flexibility of dual finishing, where the interior and exterior surfaces may be finished in different colors and formulations.

Regardless of the effect the curving process has on the finish, nearly all manufacturer and applicator warranties are voided when extrusions or brake metal are finished prior to curving. Linetec enhances its pour and debridge services by adding Azon’s Lancer

Linetec Lancer materialEnhancing our pour-and-debridge thermal improvement services, Linetec has added an Azon Lancer™ to provide mechanical surface conditioning of the aluminum extrusion cavity to ensure maximum adhesion of the thermal barrier polymer to durable, architectural finishes.

Pour-and-debridge thermal barrier systems use a two-part polyurethane that is poured into and cured within a “dog bone” structural cavity in the finished aluminum extrusion.

The channel’s surface is conditioned using the Lancer to pierce the surface creating LancerMachine2lanced, inward curving aluminum lug projections in a staggered formation along the extrusion cavity. This mechanically locks the polyurethane polymer with the finished surface of the aluminum profile to ensure significantly improved adhesion. After the polyurethane has been poured into the cavity and solidified, the metal bridge from the bottom of the channel is removed to produce a true, non metal-to-metal structural thermal barrier. 

As an approved Azo-Brader and Lancer Applicator, Linetec follows the guidelines set forth in the Azon “Quality Assurance Guide” and AAMA QAG-1-09, “Quality Assurance Processing Guide for Pour and Debridged Polyurethane Thermal Barriers.”

Aluminum extrusions that receive mechanical surface conditioning from Linetec using either the Azo-Brader or the Lancer are supported with a 10-year warranty.

90degree-strut-Schmidlapp-Close-Up-(3)Linetec is one of very few companies in North America to provide 90-degree thermal strip with a single pass using Technoform Bautec’s polyamide insulating strips and Müller Technologies AG’s knurling equipment to install the strip simultaneously on two planes of material,” explains Bart Hensley, sales engineer at Technoform Bautec.

The need for direct access from both sides has always been a design limitation of strip systems. This new capability frees up window and curtainwall designers to detail changes in place more efficiently, using a single assembly, rather than multiple pieces – without compromising energy efficiency or condensation resistance.

When installing thermal strip, Linetec follows the requirements of AAMA QAG-2-12, “Voluntary Quality Assurance Processing Guide for Polyamide Thermal Barriers.” First, the inside and outside aluminum profiles are finished in anodize, liquid paint or powder coating. Different colors and finishes may be used on each profile as the aluminum is extruded independently with a cavity that will receive the strip.

During the assembly process, knurling produces “teeth” in the aluminum pocket that “bite” into the strip and ensures appropriate shear strength of the composite profile. As material passes through the knurler, the strip is inserted into the extrusion cavity. The crimping process mechanically locks the aluminum and strip, forming the bond between the two extrusions and the strip.

Traditional 90-degree thermal strip installation was time-consuming where each piece is knurled up to three times before crimping and shear testing. This amount of handling increases the potential for marring and damage to the finished material. This new 90-degree thermal strip process employed by Linetec’s  reduces the knurling to one step. This not only saves time and labor, but also minimizes inconsistencies and waste, holds customer-specified tolerances for U-Factor and shear testing, and delivers a high-quality finished product.

Thermal Improvement Services

The main function of a thermal break system is to separate an aluminum profile into two parts to reduce thermal conductivity in a window. The two ways of doing this are by using poured polyurethane or polyamide insulating strips.

Aluminum is a highly thermal conductive material that will rapidly transfer exterior climatic temperature unless something is done to stop the thermal conduction. A thermal barrier system will improve thermal performance while maintaining the structural and long-term durability of the fenestration unit.

When considering structural longevity, wind loads in high rise buildings and in curtain wall applications, composite materials that perform both efficiently and structurally are demanded. Thermal barriers are true structural insulators that maintain an extremely high shear modulus for windloads.

Polyurethane’s pour and debridge systems are formulated for these exacting applications. Azon thermal pour and debridge offers tremendous performance, protecting against temperatures of -100C (-148F). Extreme cold, nor hot temperatures, will transfer through an aluminum frame with pour and debridge thermal barrier.

Thermal Strut involves two separate extrusions and joins them through the use of engineered structural plastic strut. Both the inside and outside aluminum profiles are extruded independently with a cavity that will ultimately receive the strut.
